Raising Chickens: My Journey from Ordering Online to a Flock of 90+.
Raising chickens has been an exciting and rewarding journey for me, and it all started back in January 2018 when I ordered my first batch of 30+ baby chicks online from https://www.cacklehatchery.com. Little did I know, this would lead to a passion for chicken keeping and eventually result in a flock of 90+ chickens. In this article, I will share my experiences and lessons learned from raising baby chickens over the past few years.
Starting Small: My first batch of baby chicks arrived in the mail, and I was thrilled to have them. I set up a brooder box in my barn and started providing them with food, water, and heat lamp. I was amazed at how quickly they grew and developed, and I soon became attached to them. This was the beginning of my love for chickens.
Building an Incubator: As I became more interested in chicken keeping, I decided to try hatching my own baby chicks. I built a homemade incubator and started collecting eggs from my hens. To my delight, I was successful in hatching most of my eggs, and this gave me a new appreciation for the life cycle of chickens. It also surprise me when different breeds mixed together to produce a new breed.
Learning from Experience: Raising baby chickens have a lot challenges, and I have learned many lessons along the way. One of the biggest challenges I faced was making sure the chicks received proper nutrition and care, and I had to experiment with different feeds to find the best one for my flock. I also had to deal with common chicken illnesses and learned how to recognize the symptoms and treat them promptly.
Growing my Flock: Over time, I continued to hatch more chicks and now I have a total of 90+ chickens. I have learned to manage and care for a larger flock, and I have found it to be a rewarding experience. I enjoy watching the chickens interact with each other, and I have even started selling eggs to my friends and family with the price range from $6 - $7/dozen.
The Benefits of Raising Chickens: Keeping chickens in your backyard has many benefits, and I have found that it has improved my life in several ways. I love watching the chickens looking for bugs around my yard, and I find them entertaining. Additionally, having fresh eggs every day is a huge plus, the eggs were much better than the one you bought from groceries store. Raising chickens has also given me a sense of responsibility, and I have learned to be a better animal keeper by protecting them from hawk, owl, fox, raccoon, Opossum, and rat.
In conclusion, raising chickens has been a wonderful journey for me, and I am grateful for the experiences and lessons that I have learned along the way. If you are interested in chicken keeping, I encourage you to give it a try. It is a rewarding and fun hobby that will bring joy and fresh eggs to your life. Happy hatching!
